Location: Anacapa Island, California
Anacapa is one of the Channel Islands off the coast of California. It is known for its wave-eroded volcanic shores, towering sea cliffs, caves, and natural bridges, including the 40-foot-high Arch Rock which is an iconic symbol of Channel Islands National Park. The channel island and Anacapa are a SCUBA diving haven! Because much of it is a marine preserve, the biodiversity absolutely thrives. The lush kelp forests are home to California sheephead, garibaldi, bat rays, moray eels, horn sharks, leopard sharks, California sea lions, harbor seals, sea stars, kelp bass, sheep crab, brightly colored nudibranchs (sea slugs), and giant sea bass, among many others. Furthermore, researchers and underwater archaeologists from USC are studying the migration patterns of the first humans to travel these islands ~13000+ years ago. They came across the now submerged land bridge known as Beringia which connected what is now Russian and Canada.
